Petersham was named by Lieutenant-Governor Major Frances Grose after has native village on the Thames, near Richmond, England. Petersham was one of the earliest settlements in the colony and was a separate municipality from 1871 to 1949. The prominent water tower on New Canterbury Road was built in 1915 over the old water reservoir that was commissioned in 1888. |
