Devonport

Exploring Northern Tasmania from Hawley House
Around Hawley on Foot

Hawley is a substantial property straddling a peninsula and bounded by a national park. The coast is wild and romantic with wonderful walks and secluded picnic spots.

The vineyard is always a centre of interest and the coastal heathlands a haven for wild things. Hawley is a photographer's delight and and a romantic's dream come true.

  • The Vineyard: 30 minutes
  • Back Beach & Heathland: 1 hour
  • Penguin Rookery Headland: 2.5 hours
  • Walk to Fisherman's Wharf along the beach: 2 hours

Going West

Take a coastal drive west to Stanley and don't miss Forth, the scenic route between Ulverstone and Penguin, Table Cape and the tulip farms and beautiful Boat Harbour Beach (the Harbour Restaurant is the lunch spot). Stanley is a sleepy old fishing port full of early buildings and craft. A ride to the top of The Nut in a chairlift followed by a walk around its perimeter is a must, as is a visit to Highfield House, the home of the Van Diemens Land Company. If there is time before you head back to Hawley for your extravagant gourmet dinner, visit Alandale Garden at Edith Creek and the Lactos Cheese Centre to stock up on Tasmania's prime cheeses.

Mountain Adventure

Head south to Latrobe and across the Mersey River to Sheffield (famous for its murals and Flo's pumpkin scones); visit Lake Barrington, Mount Roland; lunch at Weindorfers Restaurant. Now you'll have to decide whether to visit Cradle Mountain and beautiful Dove Lake (below left) or go 'over the back' to Mole Creek and King Solomon's Caves (below right). Press on to Trowunna Wildlife Park and on your way home to Hawley House call in at Kimberley Hot Springs or maybe Bowerbank Mill in Deloraine. In season, you'll just have to stop in Elizabeth Town for the irresistible Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm.

The Wine Route

With its own vineyard, Hawley House is the appropriate accommodation choice when visiting the vineyards of northern Tasmania. Our suggestions will enable you to pass a leisurely and memorable day. Start with the West Tamar vineyards of Holm Oak, Marions and Pipers Brook Strathlyn.

Visit our friends, the Doreys, at Rosevears Waterbird Haven and, later in the afternoon, browse through the galleries of Launceston or take a nostalic ferry ride on the Tamar River (below left). Return via historic Entally House or perhaps visit the fabulous garden of Culzean in Westbury.

Lost World of Loongana

Into Devonport to visit the National Trust home of Joe Lyons (Australia's only prime minister from Tasmania) and the Tiagarra Aboriginal Museum before taking the coast road west to Penguin. Travel south on the Rianna Road which runs beside the Dial Range, then on past the Beltana Ostrich Farm before dropping to magic Gunns Plains where hops thrive on fertile river flats.

Visit Gunns Plains Caves before taking the road to Leven Canyon where you can stroll to the top and then slither down on your bottom! Next comes the Lost World of Loongana with its beautifully pristine river, limestone cliffs and imposing Black Buff – you'll find nothing here except astounding natural beauty, abundant wildlife and really good trout fishing!
