Nestled in the foothills of the Australian Alps, surrounded by lush valleys and spectacular scenery and blessed with a diversity of regional produce, world class wines and four distinct seasons, Beechworth is the perfect spot for a few days of indulgence. The main streets of Beechworth are now a shopper’s paradise, housing speciality shops, old wares, galleries, antiques, pottery, cafés, restaurants, bakery and historic pubs. Bushranger Ned Kelly was tried in the courthouse, now part of the Historic and Cultural Precinct. This collection of 19th century provincial government buildings provides a wonderful glimpse into life on the early goldfields. Added to this is bushwalking, cycling the Murray to the Mountains RailTrail, gold panning, scenic drives, and touring the nearby gold rush towns of Yackandandah, Stanley and Chiltern; and wine and food regions of Beechworth, Stanley, Rutherglen, Milawa and King Valley. A little further a field is Bright, Mt Buffalo, the ski resorts of Mt Hotham and Falls Creek, and Albury and Lake Hume. So much history, places to see and things to do. |
