Cobargo – The Working Village

Since the first Europeans settled the region in the 1830s, Cobargo has been a 'working village', building on its own resources to become largely self-sufficient.

Dairying – especially cheese production – dates from the 1870s. The harvesting of wattle bark for the leather tanning industry became so important that Cobargo adopted the alternative name of 'Wattletown'.

Today, the activities of the village have changed but its philosophy has not as modern craftspeople carry on the town's tradition of self-sufficiency. The Old Convent is a short stroll from Cobargo village which has preserved most of its original architecture. The village's artisans and craftspeople will invite you into their potteries, woodcraft galleries, leather shop, antique restoration workshops and the blacksmith's workshop.
