The large black wrought iron gates on Essex Street lead you into a beautiful courtyard where you might think that you had stepped back into a bygone era. The Old Port Mill which commenced operations in 1863 was most likely built by convicts.

The main courtyard has a central fountain which provides a feeling of coolness on hot, sultry days.

The limestone property has a likeness to European architecture but is also distinctly Freo in appearance.
