Wyndham Ridge, circa 1860, offers you a traditional bed and breakfast welcome, in a heritage home set in a Australian landscape. Originally, the homestead was part of the vast Wyndham Wine Estate, which produced many wines in the late nineteenth century. This wonderful, picturesque homestead has in the past received many special visitors, including Banjo Patterson and the explorer Leichhardt Even Captain Thunderbolt, the notorious bushranger, was reputed to 'drop by' to 'borrow and exchange' horses. Guests of Wyndham Ridge can choose to be fully occupied or just relax in front of a roaring log fire or outside on the atmospheric, long verandah. Enjoy a leisurely read and a cappuccino made from freshly roasted coffee beans. Perhaps take a stroll in the grounds and enjoy some of the historical landmarks. A convict-built, free standing cellar is just one example of Wyndham Ridge's rich and colourful history. This perfectly preserved building is enjoying a renaissance as a cafe / restaurant on weekends, serving an exciting menu to satisfied patrons from both near and far. Other points of interest in and around the homestead are the ruins of a stone chapel and fine specimens of a statuesque date palm and elderly leatherjacket gumtree. Further afield, a short walk down to the Macintyre River could be accompanied by Monty, the property's old palomino stockhorse who enjoys escorting visitors. The riverbank, lined with shady willow trees and some well-placed comfortable chairs, invites guests to simply stop and enjoy the sounds and sights of nature at its most resplendent. Mornings see Pauline cook a hearty country breakfast, made to order and includes the freshest free-range eggs, local bacon and vine-ripened tomatoes, garnished with assorted herbs and vegetables grown in the homestead's kitchen garden. Wyndham Ridge is delightful all year round. The winter months entice with a cosy open fire and embracing, comfy armchairs in the old world sitting room. Summer is lazy and languid, best enjoyed in a cool and pleasant corner of the shady screened porch. Whatever time of year the lucky traveller stumbles upon Wyndham Ridge, disappointment is just not on the agenda! |
